Universal Studios said Tuesday it plans to open a theme park in South Korea by 2012 as part of its efforts to expand in the country's growing theme park industry.

Universal Studios, operated by NBC Universal Inc., a unit of U.S.-based General Electric Co., said it will develop a theme park with a local consortium that includes POSCO Engineering and Construction Co.

But it did not elaborate on the size of its investment or other detailed plans. The project will be implemented by its local partner USKOR & Associates, it said.

Earlier this month, Paramount Pictures Corp., a U.S. filmmaking and movie distributor, said it would open a theme park in the western Korean city of Incheon with Daewo Motor Sales Corp.
