Three Korean companies among world’s top 100 brands

Samsung’s ranking slips a notch, while Hyundai improves and LG comes down a bit from last year

Three South Korean firms -- Samsung Electronics, Hyundai Motor and LG Electronics -- have been included in the world’s 100 top brands this year.

According to an annual ranking report by Interbrand, a British consulting firm, Samsung’s brand value came in 21st, as it was estimated at US$16.8 billion, up 4 percent from a year earlier. However, the ranking was one notch down compared with its rank of 20th place last year.

Hyundai Motor and LG Electronics, which joined the top-100 brand club last year for the first time, were ranked 72nd and 97th, respectively. Hyundai Motor showed the fastest growth among global automakers in its brand value, the consulting firm also reported. Hyundai’s brand value improved for a third year to $4.4 billion. LG Electronics’ brand value also improved 3 percent year-on-year to $3.1 billion, but its ranking was slightly down from the previous year’s 94th.

According to the report, Coca Cola held its No. 1 position in the top-100 list but its brand value fell 3 percent to $65.3 billion. Microsoft came in second with $58.7 billion, followed by IBM ($57.0 billion), General Electric ($51.5 billion ), Nokia ($33.6 billion), Toyota ($32.0 billion) and Intel ($30.9 billion).

Google ranked in 20th place, outpacing Samsung Electronics with its brand value improving 44 percent to $17.8 billion. The growth rate was the steepest among those surveyed. Spanish fashion company Zara (64th place), U.S. tech firm Apple (33rd) and coffee franchise Starbucks (88th) posted two-digit brand value growth, while Ford (41st), Kodak (82nd), Pizza Hut (74th) and Motorola (77th) saw their brand values come down.
