South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. will consolidate its leading position in global markets for DRAMs and NAND flash memories during the fourth quarter of this year based on its technological prowess, a report forecast Wednesday.

According to the report by market researcher iSuppli, Samsung's sales of DRAMs and NAND flash chips, mostly used in computers and portable devices, respectively, will amount to US$2.34 billion and $1.71 billion in the October-December period.

In comparison, the report forecast that the world's No. 2 computer-chip maker Hynix Semiconductor would post $1.66 billion in sales of DRAMs during the same period, down from $1.81 billion a quarter earlier.

Second-ranked flash memory manufacturer Toshiba of Japan will see its sales of NAND flash memories decrease $1.12 billion in the fourth quarter from $1.13 billion recorded three months earlier, the report showed.

The report comes as global memory makers struggle to cope with a sharp rise in product prices, which experts said could chip away at the companies' earnings. According to industry data, prices of DRAMs plunged more than 50 percent during the third quarter from a year earlier and those of NAND memory products fell some 40 percent over the same period.

Samsung Electronics said it will keep its leading status in the two major memory businesses by expanding sales of products with higher capacity and performance.
