The Hyundai Heavy Industries labor union has officially taken an opposing stance on Hyundai’s acquisition of Daewoo Shipbuilding based on a vote among its members. Among 10,438 members in the Hyundai Heavy Industries chapter of the Korean Metal Workers’ Union, 9,061 (86.8%) participated in the vote, with 5,384 voting in favor of going on strike in opposition to the merger. In a press conference on Feb. 12, the union announced that hundreds of workers live in fear of being unjustly dismissed in light of the more than 35,000 workers who have lost their jobs due to corporate restructuring within the past four years, and that the recent merger with Daewoo comes as a shock to these workers. The union demanded the immediate suspension of the merger deal and requested a negotiation to work out a new agreement.
