Hyundai Motor has agreed to build a car factory in Indonesia, which will be its first in Southeast Asia. By investing around US$1.55 billion into a factory that’s expected to be fully operational by 2030, the South Korean automaker is attempting to make its mark in a market that’s been dominated by Japanese automakers. Hyundai signed a preliminary deal with the Indonesia government on Nov. 26 to build a factory in Bekasi, a city near the Indonesia capital of Jakarta, that’s expected to produce around 250,000 vehicles a year by 2030. Construction on the factory is scheduled to commence in 2021.
