Former comfort women protest Japan’s latest move to claim the Dokdo islets as its territory during their weekly demonstration in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul on May 21. The women have stood in front of the embassy every Wednesday since January 8, 1992, demanding that the Japanese government take responsibility for having drafted tens of thousands of women into sexual slavery for the Japanese military during World War II.

The Yomiuri Shimbun reported on May 18 that Japan has decided to describe the islets as Japanese territory in Japanese middle school textbooks. In response, President Lee Myung-bak directed South Korea’s foreign minister to “strongly demand a correction of Japan’s policy, if the reports is confirmed.” The Yomiuri Shimbun reported on May 20 that the Japanese people welcomed the government decision on May 20.
