Approximately 10,000 people attended the demonstration, which began at 7 p.m. on July 19, and marched down the streets of Seoul calling for renegotiation of the U.S. beef agreement. At 11 p.m., police fired water canons to disperse protest participants, who responded by shooting 30-40 firecrackers at police. Police dismissed the protesters at 3 a.m on July 20, by which time 17 citizens had been arrested.

The People’s Countermeasure Council against Mad Cow Disease, one of the leading organizers of the demonstrations, announced later that day that they would continue to organize protests until the deal is renegotiated.
