Most workers to deliver pizza or chicken food are part-time workers in their teens. They usually earn 4300-4500 Won ($3.76-$3.94) per hour and 400 Won for each delivery. They have to move quickly on their old motorcycles for each delivery.

Some famous pizza chains give a discount or do not charge for the delivery if the food is not delivered within 30 minutes. However, they levy the loss on the delivery workers. Some restaurants reportedly use timers to measure delivery times.

The delivery boys rarely demand compensation for industrial accidents even though they occur during work. This is because the restaurant owners do not want them to apply for industrial accident compensation and oppose them joining a delivery workers’ union.

A pizza delivery boy, surnamed Kwon, said, “I have to work at this type of part-time job. If I get a bad reputation while working, I cannot get a job.”

According to a report about accident insurance payments for delivery workers of a famous pizza chain obtained by the Hankyoreh, the average rate of delivery motorcycle accidents per restaurant under direct management have increased from 2.94 in 2007 to 3.53 in 2008, 3.39 in 2009, 4.10 in 2010.
