In the upper photo, a total of 1,000 drums of intermediate and low level radioactive waste from the Uljin nuclear power plant were deposited into the holding facility of South Korea's first nuclear repository in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, Dec. 24.

In the lower photo, Some 50 civic activists and local politicians protest and attempt to block the shipment in the road to the repository, saying it was not safe to operate an incomplete facility. They contended, “The dump’s permanent storage areas have yet to be completed. The holding facility on the ground is for examination, not for storage. Without our citizens' consent, the waste should not be taken into it,” causing a two-hour delay in the delivery.

In response, the state-run Korea Radioactive Waste Management Corp. said the repository has no safety problems.
