Every Nov. 11 in South Korea is Pepero Day, named after Lotte’s Pepero cookies. Peperos are long and thin and resemble the number one, which is why the day is celebrated on Nov. 11 (11/11). Lotte Corporation publicizes the day by claiming that exchanging the cookies is good for building relationships. The cartoon illustrates how Lotte’s real motivation in the holiday is increasing sales and making more money.

"Now, the Farmers’ Day and the Day of the Disabled are buried under the hollow celebration created by a corporation. What are we celebrating? Serving the company’s sole purpose of its own promotion? Or are we really believing in the cookies’ power to enhance our relationships? Maybe we are celebrating our deficiency of meaning, our deficiency of originality, our deficiency of culture, and above all, our collective will to respond to the company’s salesmanship!"
