Jogyesa Temple in Seoul, the chief temple of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, held a ceremony for young boys to experience what it’s like to be a monk on May 2, even if it’s just for a temporary period. The ceremony was held in anticipation of Buddha’s Birthday, a national holiday that will be observed on May 22. The Jogye Order dates back over 1,200 years to Master Doui, who brought the practices of Seon (known primarily as Zen in the West) to the Korean Peninsula from China. Shaving one’s head is a universal practice among monks of the Jogye Order, reflecting the Buddhist values of humility and discipline.
