Mireuksa, located in Iksan, North Jeolla Province, was the largest Buddhist temple under the kingdom of Baekje (18 BC-660 AD). The temple’s stone pagoda (Mireuksa Seoktap) has been undergoing restoration construction for the past 20 years. Erected in 639, the pagoda is known as the oldest and largest standing stone pagoda in East Asia. It was designated national treasure no. 11 in 1962. Part of the pagoda was shabbily reconstructed with concrete in 1915, during the Japanese occupation of Korea, and it was left that way for the next 90 years. The above photo was taken this past Feb., indicating the restoration process is nearly complete.
