General MacArthur’s statue to be restored

A statue of General Douglas MacArthur in Incheon will be restored by the city government. It was erected in 1957 to honor General MacArthur for his role in turning the momentum of the Korean War.

The statue was the subject of controversy after US military vehicles accidentally killed two young Korean girls in Gyeonggi Province in 2002. The government changed its plans to move the statue to a factory for restoration; it will now be treated on the spot. The city was worried that the re-erection of the statue was generate controversy. The restored statue will cost 60 million won (about US$53,000) and require increased police supervision.
