Maina Kiai, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, asserted that ““South Korea’s freedom of assembly is gradually crumbling” during a press conference at the Press Center in central Seoul, Jan. 29. The press conference was held to announce the results of Kiai’s investigations into the state of freedom of association and assembly in South Korea. It was the first time a UN Human Rights Council rapporteur had come to South Korea to conduct an investigation. (by Kim Tae-hyeong, staff photographer)
