The Chinese government said that US President Donald Trump told Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi during his visit to the US on June 22 that he hoped to move forward quickly with the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

On June 23, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a document posted to its website that Trump said during a meeting with Yang that the US hopes to strengthen cooperation with China on the Korean Peninsula issue. Yang responded by reaffirming China’s basic stance on the Korean Peninsula issue and by emphasizing that China has been making an effort through communication and cooperation with its neighbors, the Ministry reported.

On June 22, Trump asked Yang to send his regards to Chinese President Xi Jinping and said he hopes to see Xi again during the G-20 summit that will be taking place in Hamburg, Germany, next month. While mentioning that he would be visiting China within the year at Xi’s invitation, Trump said that this sort of high-level exchange would yield major results. The two sides reached these agreements during the US-China diplomacy and security dialogue, which took place on June 21 in Washington.

Yang expressed his gratitude to Trump for the US sending a delegation to a summit for international cooperation on China’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative that was held in China last month. The Chinese Foreign Ministry also reported that the two sides had also traded positive opinions about American participation in the One Belt, One Road initiative.
