Iranian-born Kim Min-hyeok, 16, received refugee status in October 2018. His father’s application, however, was denied, putting Kim at risk of being separated from his family. Kim’s father reapplied on Feb. 19, and underwent his review on June 11. Kim and his father first arrived in South Korea and shortly converted to Catholicism thereafter. Conversion is considered heresy and a severe crime in Muslim-majority Iran. The photo shows Kim on his way to the Seoul Immigration Office on the day of his father’s application review. Kim will be notified of the review’s results in around 2 weeks. (Kim Myoung-jin, staff photographer)
