Australian-Dutch human rights activist Jan Ruff O'Herne passed away on Aug. 19. O’Herne was among the women forced into sexual slavery under the Japanese imperial army during World War II, those who were referred to as the “comfort women.” O’Herne passed away in Adelaide, Australia, under the care of her family. She was 96 years old. After spending decades in silence about her past, O’Herne became inspired by Korean comfort women who spoke out about their experiences in the 1990s and spent the rest of her life campaigning against wartime sexual violence.

The photo shows O’Herne with South Korean comfort women survivors in a hearing organized by the US House of Representatives’ subcommittee of Asia, the Pacific, and Nonproliferation in Washington, DC, in February 2007.
