[Photo] S. Korean graphic novel “Grass” receives humanity comics prize

“Grass,” by Keum-suk Gendry Kim, a graphic novel based on the life of former comfort woman Lee Ok-seon, has been awarded a special judges’ prize by the progressive French daily L'Humanité. “Grass” received the daily’s humanity comic book award, the the Korea Manhwa Contents Agency announced on Sept. 19. The humanity comic book award, founded to celebrate graphic novels that deal with issues concerning human rights, was awarded for the first time this year. Judges praised “Grass” for depicting the suffering of Korean women who were forced into sexual slavery under the imperial Japanese military during the Pacific War. “Grass” has been translated into English, French, Italian, Japan, Arabic, and Portuguese.
