On Nov, 28, civic groups, the Justice Party, and the Gwangju city government held a press conference in front of the May 18 Memorial Culture Center supporting the Hong Kong pro-democracy protests, comparing them to South Korea’s own democratization movement, which was largely born out of Gwangju. Na Gyung-che, co-representative of the Justice Party, said that the Hong Kong protests have sparked historical interest in South Korea’s democratization movement among young people. The civic groups also recommended awarding next year’s Gwangju Prize for Human Rights to a leader in Hong Kong’s protest movement.
