An old US military base in Chuncheon has been found to contain much higher levels of pollutants than expected. The area around Camp Page contains levels of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) that are up to six times higher than what’s considered permissible. The environmental group Green Korea is pointing to a sloppy decontamination process before the handover of the base to South Korea. The site was also found to contain large amounts of asphalt concrete, which once made up runways and were simply buried at the site before the handover, that have yet to be removed.
