The World Health Organization (WHO) has initiated procedures to appoint a new secretary general. Egypt, Mexico and Nigeria have already nominated their candidates, and South Korea is expected to nominate its own by next month. Kim Hyun-joong, deputy national security adviser and former trade minister, and Yoo Myung-hee, current trade minister, have been mentioned as potential candidates. South Korea will highlight its success in containing COVID-19 in its case to become a global leader in health issues. WHO’s deadline for candidate nominations is July 8.
