South Korea has nominated Trade Minister Yoo Myung-hee for the position of the director-general of the World Trade Organization (WTO). If Yoo is elected to the post, she will become the WTO’ first South Korean and the first woman to become the WTO’s director general. In its announcement of the nomination, the Trade Ministry said that Yoo’s 25 years of experience in trade and her expertise have endowed her with “sufficient qualifications and capacity” for the position. In her statement on the nomination, Yoo said that South Korea can become the “bridge between advanced and developing nations” and reduce friction between the two.
