Former President Park Geun-hye was discharged Thursday from the hospital where she was receiving inpatient care, following a special pardon from President Moon Jae-in late last year.
Park stepped out of Samsung Medical Center in Gangnam, Seoul, on Thursday morning with a smile on her face. When asked about her health by the press, Park said she’d “gotten much better.”
Standing outside the hospital, Park said, “Dear Koreans, I offer my greetings for the first time in five years. Thanks to all your well wishes, I was able to recover my health. I would like to express my thanks to all the medical staff and workers at Samsung Medical Center who devoted themselves to my care over the past four months.”
Park’s first stop upon her discharge was Seoul National Cemetery, where she visited the grave of her father, Park Chung-hee.
At around 12:15 Thursday afternoon, Park arrived at her home in Daegu’s Dalseong County. Upon her arrival, Park said, “The thought of returning to my political hometown and the hometown of my heart is what got me through.”
At one point during Park’s address to the public outside her home, an individual in the crowd threw a soju bottle, which shattered on the ground. The disruption brought Park’s address to a temporary halt.
We’ve gathered some photos from today’s events.
