In 5 years, 450 schools will use durable fake turf fields

Students of Kwanghee Middle School took part in a soccer game to mark the opening of their artificial turf playing field on December 12.

Throught a project by the central and provincial governments to fund artificial grass, the plastic-derived turf will be provided to schools across the nation in a five-year plan from 2006 to 2010. Under the 177-billion-won (US$191 million) plan, 443 schools will have artificial grass playing fields constructed, at the rate of 90 schools yearly.

The project has shown immediate positive effects. Kim Yeong-jo, principal of Kwanghee Middle School, said that children were able to play on the field without raising clouds of dust, as had been the case previously. Now, he said, area residents can use the field before and after school hours without damaging the grass. In addition, some parts of the grounds have been left in their natural state.
