President Lee Myung-bak appointed KBS Business President Lee Byong-soon as the new president of the Korean Broadcasting System on August 26.

The new appointee will complete the term of former KBS President Jung Yun-joo, which will last until November 2009. Lee began working for KBS in 1977 and was previously the president of KBS Media.

In response, the group “KBS Employee Action for Defending Public Broadcasting” says it is going to prevent Lee from coming to work beginning on August 27, “in order to fight the administration’s appointment of KBS’s president in a way that is illegal and ignores procedures.”

“We will not accept any attempts by the Lee administration and the new KBS president to seize control of news and other programming,” the groups aid at a press conference.

Another group, the ‘Pan-National Action to Prevent Media Control and Netizen Suppression’, held a press conference on August 26 to announce that it “actively supports and protects the ‘employee struggle’” at KBS and that “it will not stop fighting the Lee Myung-bak administration’s control of broadcasting.”
