A female shaman performs the ’Jindo Sitgimgut,’ a shamanist ritual for cleansing the soul of deceased persons, for women in the entertainment industry including Jang Ja-yeon, who committed suicide in March.

The shaman ritual was performed with a civic organization that has supported the human rights of women in the entertainment industry. Female entertainers in South Korea have suffered from discrimination and abuse. Jang Ja-yeon, whose death made waves in South Korea, said in the suicide note she wrote in March that she had been forced to have sex with and entertain CEOs and media executives. A member of the organization said, “We hope that this ritual will be a reminder of the hardship faced by women in the entertainment industry.”
