Previously unreleased photos by war photographer Lim In-sik capture the succession of struggles experienced by the Korean people

Lieutenant Lim In-sik was deployed to the frontline as soon as the Korean War began on June 25 in 1970. The Korean Ministry of Defense organized a unit to work as war photographers following the outbreak of the Korean War. Lieutenant Lim was named the captain of the unit and covered the Korean War as the first war correspondent.

The Hankyoreh recently obtained the undisclosed pictures taken by Lieutenant Lim. His work includes captured images of the destroyed downtown of Seoul, unimaginable today. Lim’s photos also include refugees leading cattle as a primary mode of transportation or food and the young Middle School students who had applied for the volunteer army. He covered the traces and scars left by the Korean War.

Lim was awarded the Hwarang Silver Star medal for bravery in 1952, and established the Korea Photography Agency after completing his military service.
