South Korea’s military has a plan to deal with a massive influx of North Koreans in the event of emergency in North Korea, a report said Tuesday.
“For a scenario in which a large number of North Korean refugees flood toward South Korea, the military is preparing a plan to set up temporary camps to accommodate, protect and safely hand them over to government organizations,” said the report submitted to the ruling Grand National Party (GNP) Lawmaker Kim Ock-lee by the Ministry of Defense.
About 215 thousand North Koreans would flee to South Korea by sea or land borders if there were an unstable situation in North Korea, Lawmaker Kim said, citing estimates by certain experts.

Former North Korea’s Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) Secretary Hwang Jang-yop, who died three days ago, is likely to be buried at South Korea’s national cemetery, officials of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (MPVA) said Wednesday. The decision was made at a MVPA meeting earlier on the day, they added.
The highest-ranking North Korean official defected to South Korea was given the Grand Order of Mugunghwa, the highest civilian award, by the Lee government.

Military to help multiracial S.Koreans in military service
Military authorities are preparing to introduce measures to help multiracial South Korean men adjust to barracks life as visibly multiracial males are set to be drafted from next year, defense ministry officials said Tuesday.
South Korea, which traditionally prided itself on being a homogeneous country, has allowed mixed-race males of Asian descent to be conscripted for mandatory service since 2005. Still, visibly mixed-race men, particularly those from an African-American parent, have been banned from serving in the military amid concerns of racial discrimination.
