[News Briefing] Teen booked by police

A girl reportedly affected with HIV/AIDS has been under investigation by the police on charges of knowingly having sexual intercourse with about 20 men that she met through chatting on websites.
The police reported on Oct. 26 that they booked without detention the 19-year-old girl surnamed Ahn, saying that she had intercourse without telling the male partners that she was infected. Police allege that Ahn offered sex in love motels to men whom she has known from Internet sites since last September, while being paid 50,000 Won ($44.69) to 100,000 Won for each meeting.
She reportedly said that she suggested using condoms, but they refused to do so.

Open to moving in before marriage
Young South Koreans in their twenties think that it’s possible to live together with person of the opposite sex, even though they will not marry them, a survey said on Oct. 26.
Statistics Korea announced the results of their 2010 Social Survey of 37,000 people aged 15 and above nationwide in May. 59.3 percent of repondents in their 20s voiced their support, while 70.3 percent of them said that they are not opposed to international marriages.
 
S. Korea 4th in national competitiveness
The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences has ranked South Korea fourth in its assessment of “national competitiveness” of 100 economies, China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency reported on Oct. 26.  
The leading Chinese think tank , an affiliate of China’s State Council, released the Blue Book of National Competitiveness earlier this week, which ranks a country based on its economic volume, efficiency and structure as well as development potential and innovative capability for the assessment period between 1990 and 2008. The United States took the first place, followed by the European Union and Japan,
South Korea ranked 17th in the institute’s same assessment in 2006. China jumped to 17th place in 2008 from 73rd in 1990.
Meanwhile, South Korea again ranked in 39th place among 178 nations in an international corruption index announced Tuesday. According to the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) of 2010 issued by the non-governmental agency Transparency International (TI), South Korea scored 5.4 on a scale of zero to 10, down 0.1 point from last year.
