[News Briefing] N.Korea on alert for nuclear contamination

North Korea is on high alert for any possible radioactive damage from the damaged Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant in neighboring Japan, reported Yoo Yong-geun, head of the North Korean geology experts delegation, on Tuesday during talks with South Korean counterparts.
The meeting between the North Korean and South Korean civilian experts on possible volcano activity in Mount. Baekdu in North Korea took place in the South Korean border town of Munsan that day.
 
Japanese food imports to be tested for radioactive contamination
South Korea’s Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries formed an emergency team on Monday and announced its plan to test all animal, fish and seafood products imported from Japan.
As for agricultural products, the ministry will regularly test for iodine and cesium in vegetables grown near nuclear plants here in Korea as well as on the country’s east coast starting in April. And it also promised to provide information accurately and swiftly through its website to prevent a radiation scare.
In the meeting, the prime minister reiterated the importance of safety checks and said the government will run checks on all 21 nuclear facilities in Korea until April 22nd, while focusing its attention on those that have been operating for more than 20 years.

Seoul to offer Korean language classes for non-Korean children
Seoul city said Monday that it will provide Korean language classes for primary school students from abroad or multicultural families to help them better adjust to the local language and culture.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government said it will test run extensive daily classes during weekdays in three elementary schools in districts with high populations of foreign residents. It also said it plans to expand the classes to 30 schools in the capital by 2014.
