A glimpse at the text message window on the cell phone of actress Kim Yeo-jin, 38, showed it chock full of exchanges with Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) Direction Committee member Kim Jin-suk, who is currently carrying out an aerial sit-in protest on the No. 85 crane at the Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction’ (HHIC) Yeongdo shipyard, over the period between approximate 1 a.m. on June 12, when the “Hope Busses for a World Without Layoffs and Temporary Workers” rolled into the vicinity under around 11:40 the next morning.

One of them looked down and waved from a “roughly 3.5 meter square plate” atop the 35-meter crane. The other was off in the distance coming into the shipyard’s front gate, gradually approaching the crane’s iron stairway. With physical distance preventing them from speaking to one another, “tweets” and text messages served as tools of sympathy and solidarity.

Kim Yeo-jin arrived in front of the scene of the HHIC strike in Busan at 8:30 p.m. the night before on June 11, coming by train directly from the set of the miniseries “Can You Hear My Heart?” At the front, she waited around behind a police cordon before entering the shipyard at around 1 a.m., emboldened by the waves of people coming in from the Hope Buses. Emerging from the scene of the demonstration at around 10:40 a.m., Kim was detained by police an hour later. The whole process was shared with her 89 thousand followers on Twitter, and information about the HHIC issue was distributed widely through “retweets.”

Kim has been offering support in various ways at the scenes of intense demonstrations, from the January fight against layoffs of cleaning staff at Hongik University to the June tuition battle and the struggle by HHIC workers. After being let off with a warning Sunday by the Yeongdo Police Station, Kim sat down with the Hankyoreh on Monday evening at a cafe near Hongik University in Seoul.

As someone who, being an actress, depends upon popularity with a politically diverse audience for her livelihood, Kim’s actions might be perceived as “terribly reckless,” as Kim Jin-suk worried when the actress visited the scene of a sit-in strike on April 10. Kim Yeo-jin’s response was, “It is actually natural for me because I am an actress.”

“I am an actress, after all. I can imagine and understand other people’s feelings. I have made a living from that for over a decade now. I am someone for whom empathy is a skill. I imagine what people are feeling just a bit, and my own heart aches and I have to do something.”

Kim Jin-suk’s “Everyone looks awesome” comment was referring to the Kim Yeo-jin and the “Punk Outsiders.” Around thirty people joined in on Sunday as well. The “outsiders” are a “Twitter group” assembled by Kim Yeo-jin in early January while taking part in a sit-in protest for Hongik University cleaning workers. The 250 or so members represent a wide range of ages, from their teens to their sixties, and professions, including students, publishers, doctors, pharmacists, self-employed individuals, and stay-at-home mothers. Kim gave the group its name. “You know how they ask outsiders to leave when you go to the scene?” she said. “Well, all right, we are outsiders. We wanted to take their side.”

The second Kim heard about the Hongik cleaning workers’ calls for “a place to wash up,” she knew she had to visit the scene of their protest. “Actors have to understand the life someone has led from a single line of dialogue. [Cleaning workers] boarding a bus to go home without even being able to wash their hands... They were picking up the mess other people left and earning less than 800 thousand won ($735) a month for working eleven hours a day. It is just unfathomable that they have nowhere to wash up.”

As her reason for joining the HHIC workers in their battle to survive, Kim said, “This is not just someone else’s problem for me.”

“A person has been dangling up in the air for over 150 days now. Why? I was curious about her life and her sense of desperation. She is not there for herself. She is there for 172 workers laid off by Hanjin.”

Kim described acting as a job where a person waits ten hours to film for ten minutes. During her waiting time, she has sent Twitter messages, and Kim Jin-suk is one of her “Twitter friends.” The last message sent between them that day came as Kim Yeo-jin was being taken away by police.

“Where are you?” came the message from Kim Jin-suk 35 meters up in the air.

“In the paddy wagon (^^).”

“You show them!” the reply said. “Smiling, together, to the end!”

　살짝 훔쳐본 김여진(38)씨의 휴대폰 문자메시지 창에는 ‘희망 버스’ 인파가 한진중공업 85호 크레인 지척에 닿았던 12일 새벽 1시께부터 오전 11시40분께까지, 그 크레인에서 고공농성중인 김진숙 민주노총 지도위원과 나눈 메시지가 빼곡했다.

　한 사람은 35m 크레인 꼭대기 “한 평 남짓한 철판”에서 밑을 내려다보며 손을 흔들었다. 한 사람은 멀찍이 조선소 정문 밖에서 안으로, 다시 크레인 철계단으로, 점점 다가갔다. 물리적 거리 탓에 파묻히는 입 말 대신 트위트(트위터에 올린 글)와 문자메시지가 교감과 연대의 도구였다.

　배우 김여진씨가 부산 한진중 파업현장 앞에 닿은 건 전날인 11일 저녁 8시 반. 드라마 <내 마음이 들리니> 촬영이 끝나자마자 기차를 타고 달려왔다. 정문 앞, 경찰에 에워싸여 발을 동동거리다 새벽 1시께 희망버스 인파에 힘입어 조선소에 들어갔다. 오전 10시40분께 시위현장을 나온 김씨는 한 시간 뒤 경찰에 연행됐다. 이런 여정은 8만9천명의 팔로어를 거느린 그의 트위터를 통해 알려지고, 한진중 문제는 ‘리트위트’를 통해 퍼져나갔다.

　올 1월 홍대청소노동자의 해고 철회 투쟁에서부터 6월 등록금 투쟁과 한진중 노동자 투쟁까지 뜨거운 시위현장에서 전방위 지원활동을 하고 있는 배우 김여진씨. 12일 영도경찰서에서 훈방조처된 뒤 서울로 돌아온 김씨를 13일 밤 홍대 앞 한 카페에서 만났다.　

　다양한 (정치) 성향을 지닌 대중의 인기를 먹고 사는 배우로서 김씨의 행보는, 지난 4월10일 파업농성장을 찾은 그를 두고 김 위원이 걱정했듯이 “몹시 무모한 일”일 수 있다. 그러나 김씨는 “배우이기 때문에 (외려) 자연스러운 일”이라고 대답했다.

　“저는 배우잖아요. 다른 사람의 마음을 상상하고 이해하고. 그 일로 십수년 밥을 먹어온 사람이에요. 저는 공감하는 것이 기술인 사람입니다. 어떤 마음일까. 조금만 상상해 보면 마음이 아파서 가만 있을 수가 없어요.”

　“다들 멋지다”는 김 위원의 문자메시지는 김여진씨와 ‘날라리 외부세력’을 두고 한 말이다. 12일도 30여명이 함께했다. 이 ‘외부세력’은 올 1월 초 김씨가 홍익대 청소노동자 농성에 동참하면서 트위터를 통해 꾸린 ‘트위터 당’이다. 10대에서 60대까지 250여명, 학생, 출판인, 의사, 약사, 자영업자, 주부 등 직업도 다양한다. 이름도 김씨가 지었다. “현장에만 가면 외부세력은 나가달라고 하잖아요. 그래요, 우린 외부세력인데, 그 분들 편을 들겠다는 겁니다.”

　김씨는 “손 씻을 공간이 필요합니다”라는 홍익대 청소노동자들의 목소리를 접하는 순간, 그 농성장에 가야겠다고 생각했다. “배우는 대사 한 마디에서 지나온 삶을 이해해야 하는 사람입니다. 손도 못 씻고 버스 타고 집에 가고. 하루 11시간 노동에 월급 80만원도 못 받으면서, 남들이 어지럽혀 놓은 것 치웠잖아요. 손 씻을 공간이 없다는 것은 말이 되지 않잖아요.”

　그는 한진중 해고 노동자들의 생존투쟁에 함께하는 까닭을 “남의 일이 아니기 때문”이라고 했다. “한 사람이 150여일째 고공에 매달려 있어요. 왜? 그 사람의 인생과 절박함에 대해 저는 궁금해요. 그 분은 혼자가 아니라 172명 한진 해고노동자를 위해서 거기 있는 겁니다.”

　그는 10분을 찍으려고 10시간을 기다리는 직업이 배우라고 했다. 기다리는 시간에 트위터를 했고, 김 위원은 그의 ‘트위트 친구’다. 두 사람의 이날 마지막 문자는 김씨가 경찰에 연행되던 중에 송수신됐다. “어디신가요?” 35m 공중에서 김 위원이 물었다. “호송차 안 (^^).” 김 위원의 답신은 “홧팅! 웃으며, 함께, 끝까지!”
