Almost a fifth of all onions produced in South Korea come from Muan County, South Jeolla Province. This year, with onion prices very low, farmers have stacked hundreds of bags of onions along the side of the road. The government announced a plan to purchase 25,000 tonnes but the farmers have requested the purchase of 110,000 tonnes. The onions have been covered with protective material, and the farmers are hoping they will keep for some time. (by Lee Jeong-ah, staff photographer)
