Representatives from the military and local governments announce a plan on Apr. 27 in Gangneung, Gangwon Province to remove barbed wire fences from the east coast, saying that the fences harm the landscape and the local residents’ quality of life. The fences also cut off the beach, harming the local economy. In the past they have only been opened at certain points during the summer to allow access to the beach. (Yonhap News)
