Nov. 13 was the forty-sixth anniversary of the suicide by self-immolation of Jeon Tae-il, a worker who lit himself on fire while chanting “Abide by the Labor Standards Act! We are not machines!” Jeon is credited with starting the labor movement in South Korea, but the situation of fair labor standards he hoped for still hasn’t been realized. On Nov. 13, members of the Part-Time Workers‘ Union visited this statue of Jeon on the Cheonggye Stream in Seoul (near the factory where Jeon worked) after holding a march calling for a minimum wage of 10,000 won (US$8.55).
