A banana tree in Daegu, maintained by Kim Deok-kyu, made its first fruit in May, after being planted four years ago and having blooming flowers in September of last year. Lim Chan-kyu, a researcher at the Agricultural Research Center for Climate Change, National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science, Rural Development Administration, said, “In order to grow, bananas need a minimum winter temperature of ten degrees. Unless in a green house, bananas can’t grow in South Korea. It‘s very unusual for a banana tree to grow outside of a house.” (by Kim Il-woo, Daegu correspondent)
