Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon and International Labour Organization Director General Guy Ryder lay flowers at the base of a statue of Jeon Tae-il at the bridge named for the famed labor activist in Cheongyecheon, Seoul on Sept. 5. Jeon was working in a textile factory when he self immolated in 1970 in order to draw attention to poor working conditions. After setting himself on fire, he ran down the street shouting, “Enforce the Law of Labor Standards!” Ryder was in the capital to attend the International Forum on Transforming Cities for Decent Work.
