On Sept. 8, the Cultural Heritage Administration announced that it will give official recognition to the process of kimchi making as a national intangible cultural asset. In announcing its decision, the CHA said that kimchi making goes beyond the concept of “Kimchi Culture” that was recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013, as it wanted to include all characteristics of the process that were inherent to different regions in Korea.
