A dedication ceremony was held for a comfort woman statue that was erected in the Uiwang City Rail Park on Mar. 1. Unlike other comfort women statues, this one is in a standing position, which represents an overcoming of hardship and an ability to move forward. The ceremony featured the statue’s unveiling, a traditional salpuri dance, recitation of memorial poetry, and choral songs. The statue was made possible through donations by civic groups over a period of nine months. “I hope that this comfort woman statue, which has been established together with the sincere efforts of our citizens, will restore the human rights and honor of the women and provide a chance to remember this painful history,” said Uiwang Mayor Kim Seong-je.
