The Korean Health and Medical Workers’ Union released the results of a report on working conditions in the South Korean medical industry at their headquarters on Mar. 20. The union called for reforms to address a variety of problems in the industry, including maternal leave, vacation and break time, patients being subjected to forced medical treatment, and the industry’s so-called “burn culture.” The burn culture, in which younger nurses are subjected to verbal and psychological abuse from their superiors, came under renewed scrutiny following the recent suicide of a young nurse at the Seoul Asan Medical Center last month.
