The Seoul Regional Shoemakers’ Union of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions announced on Apr. 16 that 98 of Tandy’s subcontractors have been on strike since Apr. 6. In 2000, the renowned Korean footwear manufacturer Tandy began declaring their shoemakers who were full-time regular employees were now being hired as “subcontractors” in order to save on labor costs Shoemakers and workers are in the midst of a sit-down demonstration on the third floor of Tandy headquarters in Seoul’s Gwanak District to demand direct employment. In the above photos, a man talks on the phone to his daughter below, who came to see her father on May 7, one day before Parents’ Day in Korea, as she couldn’t meet him on that day. The sign depicted declares the temporary closing of the first-floor showroom of Tandy headquarters.
