Citizens of Gwangju gathered on May 17 on Geumnam Street in front of the old South Jeolla Provincial Office (now the Asia Culture Center) to honor those who were killed by martial law troops in a series of brutal incidents collectively referred to as the Gwangju Massacre. The Gwangju Democratization Movement occurred between May 18 and 27, 1980. The photos capture people mourning, performing various historical reenactments and engaging in ceremonies to honor the victims while calling for a proper investigation into the then military regime’s crimes. In attendance were surviving family members of the victims.
