Following a crushing defeat in the mayoral and gubernatorial elections and the resignation of party leader Hong Joon-pyo on June 14, acting chief of the Liberty Korea Party (LKP) Kim Sung-tae announced on June 18 that the party will immediately begin disbanding its central organization. Kim also announced the party would form a task force assigned to “revolutionize” the party as needed. Observers have analyzed the move as a way to reinvent the party without completely disbanding.
