The most controversial venues for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, Alpensia and Yongpyong resorts, have left a giant scar on Mt. Gariwang, in Gangwon Province. A lush forest of trees over 500 years was cleared for the resorts’ construction. Environmentalists have called for conservations efforts while business owners have called for the resorts to remain to attract tourism. Furthermore, with Typhoon Soulik set to sweep the Korean Peninsula on Aug. 23-24, experts are concerned about the potential for destructive landslides. The above photos feature the resort site as well as local residents protesting against conservation efforts. (Kim Jeong-su, staff photographer, and Jeongseon County)
