A South Korean study has revealed for the first time that birth control pills increase the chances of committing suicide by 13 percent. From 2007 to 2016, a research team at Yonsei University’s Department of Preventative Medicine led by Professors Jung Sun-jae and Kim Hyeon-chang conducted a survey of 27,067 South Korean females over age 20 regarding the effect of birth control pills on thoughts and behavior related to suicide. The results of the study were published in the latest edition of the Journal of Affected Disorders, published by the International Society for Affective Disorders. Among the study’s participants, 15 percent (4,067) displayed suicidal thoughts or behaviors; 19.9 percent of them (812) had taken birth control before.
