The Korean Public Service and Transport Workers' Union has released a photograph of the personal belongings of Kim Young-gyun, a 24-year-old subcontractor worker who died in a machinery accident while working the nightshift at Taean Power Plant in South Chungcheong Province, on Dec. 11. The photograph shows the items Kim had brought for his shift, including a flashlight, batteries, a spare uniform and instant ramen noodles. A notepad reveals several smudges of coal. A fellow colleague explained that Kim was often dispatched to clean up scattered coal fragments, leaving no time for breaks or meals, hence the uneaten ramen. “He’d always eat ramen because he never knew when he’d be called to go back on duty,” the colleague explained.
