He suffered torture until he “confessed” to being a spy, after which he was sentenced to 12 years for violating national security laws. The Seoul High Court declared Kim innocent in August 2018, 43 years after his wrongful arrest and imprisonment. Kim’s life story was the subject of the documentary film “Spy Nation” (2016).
