A demonstrator who was arrested and charged for “illegally demonstrating” the military dictatorship of former President Chun Doo-hwan in Mokpo, South Jeolla Province, during the events of Gwangju Democratization Movement, has been confirmed as not guilty after 37 years after his original conviction. The Gwangju District Court announced the verdict of the retrial of the demonstrator, surnamed Park, on July 21. The ruling declared that opposing the dictatorship of Chun Doo-hwan was not a crime but a justified act to establish the South Korean constitution.
