A transgender South Korean sergeant who transitioned from male to female during leave in Thailand has requested to continue serving in the South Korean Army as a woman. A military committee is expected to begin reviewing the sergeant’s case on Jan. 22. The committee will ultimately decide whether to allow the sergeant to continue serving or discharge her. The civic group Center for Military Human Rights Korea (CMHRK), however, has announced that the committee rejected the CMHRK’s request to delay the review until after the sergeant’s legal sex was changed from male to female. The CMHRK claimed that if the sergeant is discharged it would be “an irreversible human rights violation.”
