Just as the domestic travel industry and airlines saw a glimmer of hope from people taking trips during their summer holidays, a second wave of COVID-19 that has spread from the Seoul Capital Area (SCA) to the rest of the country has dampened their spirits once again. According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, the number of passengers on domestic flights for this past weekend (Aug. 22-23) was 180,235, a reduction of around 20% from the previous weekend, which saw 224,778 passengers. Korean airlines have desperately relied on domestic flights since drastically reducing their number of international flights since February.
