Civic groups and environmental activists continue their campaign against Japan’s plan to dump radioactive water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean. As of September, there were around 1.23 million tons of contaminated water stored at the power plant, and the amount continues to increase by around 160 to 170 tons each day. On Nov. 9, activists gathered in front of the former Japanese Embassy in Seoul to protest Tokyo’s plans for the ocean dump. Demonstrators set up barrels marked “radioactive waste” and held up signs vowing to boycott Japanese seafood if the ocean release proceeds as planned. They also called on the South Korean government to ban imports of Japanese seafood in order to discourage Japan from proceeding with the ocean release.
